Bronx County has some of the highest rates of asthma in the country. The epidemic is largely attributed to the community’s proximity to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, the largest of its kind in the United States. Rates of death from asthma in the Bronx are about three times higher than the national average, and preventable hospitalization rates are about five times higher. In some neighborhoods in the Bronx it is estimated that one in four children have asthma. But the community of Port Morris and Mott Haven are fighting back the industrial pollution — by building their own green spaces.
Despite laws banning e-cigarette sales to patrons under 21 years of age, minors report few problems obtaining their favorite vaporizer products and stores that sell to minors rarely get shut down or face serious consequences, a three month investigation shows.
In the 1970s through the 1990s, Central Harlem was considered the center of urban decay and crime in New York. But since that era, crime has dropped, with murders and shootings down by 71 percent, according to a report by DNAinfo. But residents like Duke Tango, who was born and raised in Central Harlem, remembered being around some “big names” who were using and selling drugs while he was growing up. He made the decision to stay away from this crowd, but he did know of a lot of people who got sucked into it.

Christopher Persley woke up around 7 a.m. He got breakfast and lunch for his five-year-old daughter, Camilla, before she left for school. For the rest of the afternoon, Persley did dishes, finished laundry, cleaned the house, and squeezed in some reading and writing. Once his daughter got back from school they played, ate a home cooked meal, and started getting ready for bed.
